3 Could we bear from one another
What He daily bears from us?
Yet this glorious Friend and Brother
Loves us though we treat Him thus :
Though for good we render ill,

He accounts us brethren still.

4 Oh! for grace our hearts to soften! Teach us, Lord, at length to love! We, alas! forget too often

What a Friend we have above: But, when home our souls are brought, We will love Thee as we ought.

I

JESUS

36.

ESUS! lead us with Thy power
Safe unto the promised rest;
Hide our souls within Thy bosom ;
Let us slumber on Thy breast;
Feed us with the heavenly manna,
Bread that angels eat above;
Let us drink from the holy Fountain
Draughts of everlasting love!

2 Throughout the desert wild conduct
With a glorious pillar bright,
In the day a cooling comfort,
And a cheering fire by night;
Be our guide in every peril,
Watch us hourly night and day;
Otherwise we'll err and wander
From Thy Spirit far away.

3 In Thy Presence we are happy;
In Thy Presence we're secure ;
In thy Presence all afflictions
We will easily endure;

In Thy Presence we can conquer,
We can suffer, we can die;

Far from Thee we faint and languish :

Lord, our Saviour, keep us nigh!

37.

I GOD is love; the heavens tell it
Through their glorious orbs of light,
In that glad and golden language
Speaking to us day and night,
Their great story,

God is love and God is light.

2 And the teeming earth rejoices
In that message from above,
With ten thousand thousand voices
Telling back, from hill and grove,
Her glad story,

God is might and God is love.

3 Through these anthems of creation,
Struggling up with gentle strife,
Christian songs of Christ's salvation
To the world with blessings rife,
Tell their story,

God is love and God is life.

4 Up to Him let each affection

I

Duly rise and round Him move;
Our whole lives one resurrection
To the life of life above;

Our glad story,

God is life and God is love.

38.

LORD! another day is flown,
And we, a lonely band,

Are met once more before Thy throne,
To bless Thy fostering hand.

2 And wilt Thou lend a listening ear
To praises low as ours?

Thou wilt for Thou dost love to hear
The song which meekness pours.

3 And, Jesus, Thou Thy smile wilt deign, As we before Thee pray,

For Thou didst bless the infant train,
And we are less than they.

4 Oh, let Thy grace perform its part,
And let contention cease;
And shed around in every heart
Thine everlasting peace.

5 Thus chasten'd, cleansed, and wholly thine,
A flock by Jesus led,

The Sun of holiness shall shine

In glory round our head.

6 And Thou wilt turn our wandering feet,
And Thou wilt bless our way!

Till worlds shall fade, and faith, shall greet
The dawn of lasting day.

39.

1 FAR from my heavenly home,
Far from my Father's breast,
Fainting, I cry, blest Spirit, come,

And speed me to my rest.

2 Upon the willows long

My harp has silent hung:

How should I sing a cheerful song,
Till Thou inspire my tongue?

3 My spirit homeward turns,
And fain would thither flee;
My heart, O Sion, droops and yearns,
When I remember thee.

4 To thee, to thee I press,

A dark and toilsome road;
When shall I pass the wilderness,
And reach the saints' abode?

5 God of my life, be near,

On Thee my hopes I cast,

O guide me through the desert here,
And bring me home at last.

40.

1 LEAD, kindly Light, amid the encircling gloom, Lead Thou me on;

The night is dark, and I am far from home;
Lead Thou me on;

Keep Thou my feet; I do not ask to see
The distant scene; one step enough for me.

2 I was not ever thus, nor pray'd, that Thou
Should lead me on;

I loved to choose and see my path; but now
Lead Thou me on;

I loved the garish day, and spite of fears,
Pride ruled my will: Remember not past years!
3 So long Thy power has blest me, sure it still
Will lead me on,

O'er moor and fen, o'er crag and torrent, till
The night is gone,

And with the morn those angel faces smile
Which I have loved long since, and lost awhile!

41.

I GIVE heed, my heart, lift up thine eyes
Who is it in yon manger lies?
Who is this Child so young and fair?
The blessèd Christ-child lieth there.

2 Ah, dearest Jesus, holy Child,
Make Thee a bed, soft, undefiled,
Within my heart, that it may be
A quiet chamber kept for Thee.
3 My heart for very joy doth leap,
My lips no more can silence keep;
I too must sing with joyful tongue,
That sweetest ancient cradle song.
4 Glory to God in highest heaven,
Who unto man His Son hath given !
While angels sing with pious mirth,
A glad new year to all the earth.

42.

I WE'VE no abiding city here :

!

This may distress the worldling's mind; But should not cost the saint a tear,

Who hopes a better rest to find.

2 We've no abiding city here:

Sad truth, were this to be our home!
But let this thought our spirits cheer,
We seek a city yet to come.

3 We've no abiding city here:

Then let us live as pilgrims do! Let not the world our rest appear, But let us haste from all below.

4 We've no abiding city here:

We seek a city out of sight; Zion its name, the Lord is there, It shines with everlasting light!

5 Zion! Jehovah is her strength;

Secure she smiles at all her foes; And weary travellers at length

Within her sacred walls repose.

6 O! sweet abode of peace and love, Where pilgrims freed from toil are blest! Had I the pinions of a dove,

I'd flee away, and be at rest!

43.

I OH God, our help in ages past,
Our hope for years to come,

Our shelter from the stormy blast,
And our eternal home :

2 Beneath the shadow of Thy Throne
Thy saints have dwelt secure ;
Sufficient is Thine arm alone,
And our defence is sure.

3 Before the hills in order stood,
Or earth received her frame,
From everlasting Thou art God,
To endless years the same.

4 A thousand ages in Thy sight
Are like an evening gone;
Short as the watch that ends the night
Before the rising sun.

5 Time, like an ever-rolling stream,
Bears all its sons away;

They fly, forgotten, as a dream
Dies at the opening day.
