By self and Satan taught to paint
My tomb, my nature white.

HYMN 66. (C. M.)
Confessing.

1 THE men who slight thy faithful word,

In their own lies confide:

These are the temple of the Lord,
And heathens all beside.

2 The temple of the Lord are these,
The only church and true,

Who live in pomp, and wealth, and ease,
And Jesus never knew!

3 O wou'dst thou, Lord, reveal their sins! And turn their joy to grief!

The world, the christian world, convince
Of damning unbelief.

4 The formalist confound, convert,
And to thy people join;

1

And break, and fill the broken heart,

With confidence divine!

HYMN 67. (P. M.)

Acknowledging God.

OMFORT, ye ministers of grace,
Comfort my people, saith your God;

Ye soon shall see his smiling face,

His golden sceptre, not his rod;

And own when now the cloud's remov'd,
He only chast'ned whom he lov'd.

2 Who sow in tears, in joy shall reap;
The Lord will comfort all that mourn;
Who now go on their way and weep

With joy they doubtless shall return;
And bring their sheaves with vast increase,
And have their fruit to holiness.

HYMN 68. (C. M.)
Formality.

ONG have I seem'd to serve thee, Lord,
With unavailing pain:

Fasted, and pray'd, and read thy word,
And heard it preach'd in vain.

2 Oft did I with th' assembly join,
And near thine altar drew:
A form of godliness was mine,
I never knew.

The power

3 I rested in the outward law;
Nor knew its deep design;
The length and breadth I never saw,
And height of love divine.

4 To please thee thus, at length I see,
Vainly I hop'd and strove;
For what are outward things to thee,
Unless they spring from love?

5 I see the perfect law requires
Truth in the inward parts;

Our full consent, oùr whole desires,
Our undivided hearts.

But I of means have made

my

boast,

Of means an idol made!

The spirit in the letter lost,
The substance in the shade!

HYMN 69. (C. M.)

Desires.

FOR a heart to praise my God,
A heart from sin set free!

A heart that always feels thy blood,
So freely spilt for me!

2 A heart, resign'd, submissive, meek,
My great Redeemer's throne;
Where only Christ is heard to speak,
Where Jesus reigns alone.

3 O for a lowly, contrite heart,
Believing, true, and clean!

Which neither life nor death can part
From him that dwells within!

4 A heart in every thought renew'd,
And full of love divine!

Perfect, and right, and pure, and good,
A copy, Lord, of thine!

5 Thy tender heart, is still the same,
And melts at human woe;
Jesus, for thee distrest I am,
I want thy love to know.

6 Thy nature, gracious Lord, impart,
Come quickly from above:

Write thy new name upon my heart,
Thy new, best name of love!

HYMN 70. (C. M.)

Desires.

ALK with us, Lord, thyself reveal,
While here o'er earth we rove ;
Speak to our hearts, and let us feel
The kindling of thy love.

2 With thee conversing, we forget
All time, and toil, and care:
Labour is rest, and pain is sweet,
If thou, my God, art here.

3 Here then, my God, vouchsafe to stay, And bid my heart rejoice;

My bounding heart shall own thy sway,
And echo to thy voice.

4. Thou callest me to seek thy face;
'Tis all I wish to seek:

To' attend the whispers of thy grace,
And hear thee kindly speak.

5 Let this my ev'ry hour employ,
Till I thy glory see;

Enter into my Master's joy,

And find

my

heaven in thee.

HYMN 71. (C. M.)

Describing.

1 TERRIBLE thought! shall I alone, Who may be sav'd-shall I

Of all, alas! whom I have known,
Through sin for ever die?

2 While all my old companions dear,
With whom I once did live,
Joyful at God's right-hand appear,
A blessing to receive :-
3 Shall I, amidst a ghastly band-
Dragg'd to the Judgment-seat,
Far on the left with horror stand,
My fearful doom to meet?

4 Ah! no: I still may turn and live;
For still his wrath delays:
He now vouchsafes a kind reprieve,
And offers me his grace.

5 I will accept his offers know,
From every sin depart;
Perform my oft-repeated vow,
And render him my heart.

6 I will improve what I receive,
The grace through Jesus given;
Sure, if with God on earth I live,
To live with him in heaven.

HYMN 72, (All 10s.)

Goodness.

1

1 THY faithfulness, Lord, each moment we

find,

grace.

So true to thy word, so loving and kind!
Thy mercy so tender to all the lost race:
The foulest offender may turn and find
2 The mercy I feel, to others I shew;
I set to my seal, that Jesus is true:
