FREE from the law, oh, happy

condition!

[sion! Jesus hath bled, and there is remisCursed by the law, and bruised by the fall,

Grace hath redeemed us once for all.

Once for all, O sinner, receive it,
Once for all, O brother, believe it;
Cling to the Cross, the burden will fall,
Christ hath redeemed us once for all.

2 Now are we free-there's no condemnation;

Jesus provides a perfect salvation: "Come unto Me,"-oh, hear His sweet call!

Come, and He saves us once for all. 3 "Children of God!" oh, glorious calling, [falling; Surely His grace will keep us from Passing from death to life at His call,

Blessed salvation once for all

[blocks in formation]

Let us keep the wheat and roses,
Casting out the thorns and chaff.
Let us find our sweetest comfort
In the blessings of to-day,
With a patient hand removing
All the briers from the way.

Then scatter seeds of kindness,
Then scatter seeds of kindness,
Then scatter seeds of kindness,
For our reaping by-and-by.

2 Strange we never prize the music
Till the sweet-voiced bird has
flown!
[violets
Strange that we should slight the
Till the lovely flowers are gone!
Strange that summer skies and sun-
Never seem one half so fair, [shing
As when winter's snowy pinions
Shake the white down in the air.
3 If we knew the baby fingers,

Pressed against the window pane,
Would be cold and stiff to-morrow-
Never trouble us again-
Would the bright eyes of our darling
Catch the frown upon our brow ?-
Would the prints of rosy fingers

Vex us then as they do now ?

4 Ah! those little ice-cold fingers,

How they point our memories back
To the hasty words and actions

Strewn along our backward track!
How those little hands remind us,
As in snowy grace they lie,
Not to scatter thorns-but roses,
For our reaping by-and-by.

3 Come home, come home! From the
sorrow and blame,
From the sin and the shame, and the
tempter that smiled: [come home!
O prodigal child! Come home; oh
4 Come home, come home! There is
bread and to spare,

And a warm welcome there: then to
friends reconciled, [come home!
O prodigal child! Come home; oh
Tune-S. S. & S., No. 14.

TELL

me the Old, Old Story
Of unseen things above,
Of Jesus and His glory,
Of Jesus and His love.
Tell me the Story simply,
As to a little child,
For I am weak and weary,
And helpless and defiled.

Tell me the Old, Old Story,
Of Jesus and His love.

2 Tell me the Story slowly,
That I may take it in-
That wonderful redemption,
God's remedy for sin.
Tell me the Story often,
For I forget so soon;
The "early dew" of morning
Has passed away at noon.

3 Tell me the Story softly,

With earnest tones and grave;
Remember! I'm the sinner
Whom Jesus came to save.

Tell me that Story always,
If you would really be,
In any time of trouble,
A comforter to me.

4 Tell me the same Old Story,
When you have cause to fear
That this world's empty glory
Is costing me too dear.
Yes, and when that world's glory
Is dawning on my soul,

Tell me the Old, Old Story:

66

Christ Jesus makes thee whole."

Tune-S. S. & S., No. 15.

STAND up! stand up for Jesus!
Ye soldiers of the cross;
Lift high His royal banner,
It must not suffer loss;
From victory unto victory
His army shall He lead,
Till every foe is vanquished,
And Christ is Lord indeed.
Stand up! stand up for Jesus!
The trumpet call obey;
Forth to the mighty conflict
In this His glorious day!
Ye that are men, now serve Him
Against unnumbered foes;
Let courage rise with danger,

And strength to strength oppose.
3 Stand up! stand up for Jesus!
Stand in His strength alone;
The arm of flesh will fail you-
Ye dare not trust your own:
Put on the gospel armour,
And, watching unto prayer,
Where duty calls, or danger,
Be never wanting there.

4 Stand up! stand up for Jesus!
The strife will not be long;
This day the noise of battle,
The next the victor's song▸
To him that overcometh
A crown of life shall be
He with the King of glory
Shall reign eternally.

Here in our midst He's standing toTenderly saying, "Come!"

Joyful, joyful, will the meeting be, When from sin our hearts are pure and free. And we shall gather, Saviour, with Thee, In our eternal home.

Tune-S. S. & S., No. 18.

HA
ARK the voice of Jesus crying,-
"Who will go and work to-day?
Fields are white, and harvest waiting;
Who will bear the sheaves away?
Loud and strong the Master calleth,
Rich reward He offers thee;
Who will answer, gladly saying?-
"Here am I; send me, send me!"

2 If you cannot cross the ocean,

And the heathen lands explore, You can find the heathen nearer, You can help them at your door. If you cannot give your thousands, You can give the widow's mite; And the least you do for Jesus Will be precious in His sight. 3 If you cannot speak like angels, If you cannot preach like Paul, You can tell the love of Jesus, You can say He died for all,

4

If you cannot rouse the wicked
With the Judgment's dread alarms,
You can lead the little children
To the Saviour's waiting arms.

If you cannot be the watchman,
Standing high on Zion's wall,
Pointing out the path to heaven,
Offering life and peace to all;
With your prayers and with your
bounties

You can do what heaven demands; You can be like faithful Aaron, Holding up the prophet's hands.

5 If, among the older people,

You may not be apt to teach; "Feed my lambs," said Christ our Shepherd,

"Place the food within their reach."

And it may be that the children

You have led with trembling hand, Will be found among your jewels, When you reach the better land. 6 Let none hear you idly saying "There is nothing I can do," While the souls of men are dying, And the Master calls for you. Take the task He gives you gladly, Let His work your pleasure be; Answer quickly when He calleth, "Here am I; send me, send me !"

came,

Brought out their sick, and deaf, and The blind rejoiced to hear the cry, "Jesus of Nazareth passeth by." 4 Again He comes! From place to place

His holy footprints we can trace. He pauseth at our threshold-nay, He enters-condescends to stay. Shall we not gladly raise the cry ?"Jesus of Nazareth passeth by." 5 Ho! all ye heavy-laden, come! Here's pardon, comfort, rest, and home.

Ye wanderers from a Father's face, Return, accept His proffered grace. Ye tempted ones, there's refuge nigh: "Jesus of Nazareth passeth by." 6 But if you still His call refuse,

And all His wondrous love abuse,

Tune-S. S. & S., No. 22.

DOWN life's dark vale we wander,

Till Jesus comes.

We watch, and wait, and wonder,
Till Jesus comes.

Oh, let my lamp be burning,
When Jesus comes;
For Him my soul be yearning,
When Jesus comes.

All joy His loved ones bringing,-When, &c.
All praise through heaven ringing,-When,&c.
All beauty bright and vernal,-When, &c.
All glory grand, eternal,-When, &c.
2 No more heart-pangs nor sadness,
All peace, and joy, and gladness;
All doubts and fears will vanish,
All gloom His face will banish.

3 He'll know the way was dreary, He'll know the feet grew weary, He'll know what griefs oppressed me, Oh, how His arm will rest me!

Tune-S. S. & S., No. 23.

And that will be glory for me.

And that will be glory for me, oh, that will be glory for me;

But I know that His presence will lighten the gloom,

And that will be glory for me.

2 I know not the song that the angels sing,

I know not the sound of the harps' glad ring;

But I know there'll be mention of Jesus our King,

And that will be music for me.

And that will be music for me, etc.

Tune-S. S. & S., No. 25.

SAFE in the arms of Jesus,
Safe on His gentle breast,
There by His love o'ershaded,
Sweetly my soul shall rest.
Hark! 'tis the voice of angels
Borne in a song to me,
Over the fields of glory,
Over the jasper sea.

Safe in the arms of Jesus,
Safe on His gentle breast,
There by His love o'ershaded
Sweetly my soul shall rest.

2 Safe in the arms of Jesus,
Safe from corroding care,
Safe from the world's temptations,
Sin cannot harm me there.
Free from the blight of sorrow,
Free from my doubts and fears;
Only a few more trials,

Tune-S. S. & S., No. 24.

shout the sound!

Send the blessed tidings all the world around!

Only a few more tears! Jesus, my heart's dear refuge, Jesus has died for me;

Firm on the Rock of Ages
Ever my trust shall be.

Here let me wait with patience,
Wait till the night is o'er;
Wait till I see the morning
Break on the golden shore.
