Tune-S. S. & S., No. 42.

SOWING the seed by the dawnlight fair, [glare; Sowing the seed by the noonday Sowing the seed by the fading light, Sowing the seed in the solemn night: Oh, what shall the harvest be? Oh, what shall the harvest be ? Sown in the darkness or sown in the light, Sown in our weakness or sown in our might; Gathered in time or eternity, Sure, ah sure, will the harvest be!

2 Sowing the seed by the wayside high, Sowing the seed on the rocks to die; Sowing the seed where the thorns will spoil,

Sowing the seed in the fertile soil: Oh, what will the harvest be? 3 Sowing the seed of a lingering pain, Sowing the seed of a maddened brain, Sowing the seed of a tarnished name, Sowing the seed of eternal shame : Oh, what shall the harvest be?

4 Sowing the seed with an aching heart, Sowing the seed while the tear-drops start,

Sowing in hope till the reapers come Gladly to gather the harvest home: Oh, what shall the harvest be?

Tune-S. S. & S., No. 44.

CHRIST, what burdens bowed
Thy head!

Our load was laid on Thee;
Thou stoodest in the sinner's stead,
Didst bear all ill for me.

A Victim led, Thy blood was shed;
Now there's no load for me.
Death and the curse were in our cup:
O Christ, 'twas full for Thee!
But Thou hast drained the last dark
'Tis empty now for me: [drop,
That bitter cup, love drank it up,
Now blessing's draught for me.
Jehovah lifted up His rod;

O Christ, it fell on Thee!

Thou wast sore stricken of Thy God; There's not one stroke for me.

Thy tears, Thy blood, beneath it flowed;

Thy bruising healeth me.

4 The tempest's awful voice was heard, 2 Oh, think of the friends over there,

O Christ, it broke on Thee!
Thy open bosom was my ward
It braved the storm for me.

Thy form was scarred, Thy visage
marred;

Now cloudless peace for me.

5 Jehovah bade His sword awake, O Christ, it woke 'gainst Thee; Thy blood the flaming blade must slake,

Thy heart its sheath must be; All for my sake, my peace to make : Now sleeps that sword for me. 6 For me, Lord Jesus, Thou hast died, And I have died in Thee: Thou'rt risen-my bands are all unAnd now Thou liv'st in me: [tied; When purified, made white, and Thy GLORY then for me. [tried,

45 Tune-S. S. & S., No 45. THERE is a fountain filled with blood,

Drawn from Immanuel's veins, And sinners plunged beneath that Lose all their guilty stains. [flood 2 The dying thief rejoiced to see

That fountain in his day;
And there may I, though vile as he,
Wash all my sins away.

3 E'er since by faith I saw the stream Thy flowing wounds supply, Redeeming love has been my theme,

And shall be till I die.

4 Then in a nobler, sweeter song
I'll sing Thy power to save,

When this poor, lisping, stammering
Lies silent in the grave.

OH, think of the home over there,

By the side of the river of light, Where the saints all immortal and fair [white.

Are robed in their garments of Over there, over there, oh, think of the home over there.

3 My Saviour is now over there,

There my kindred and friends are at rest;

Then, away from my sorrow and care, Let me fly to the land of the blest. Over there, over there, my Saviour is now over there.

4 O Jesus the crucified! Thee will I
sing,
[my King;
My blessed Redeemer, my God, and
My soul, filled with rapture, shall 2
shout o'er the grave,

And triumph in death in the

48 Tune-S. S. & S., No. 48.

S WEET hour of prayer! sweet hour
of prayer!

That calls me from a world of care,
And bids me at my Father's throne
Make all my wants and wishes
known:

In seasons of distress and grief,
My soul has often found relief,
And oft escaped the tempter's snare,
By thy return, sweet hour of prayer.
2 Sweet hour of prayer! sweet hour
of prayer!

Thy wings shall my petition bear
To Him whose truth and faithfulness
Engage the waiting soul to bless :
And since He bids me seek His face,
Believe His word, and trust His
grace,

I'll cast on Him my every care,
And wait for thee, sweet hour of
prayer!

3 Sweet hour of prayer! sweet hour
of prayer!

May I thy consolation share,
Till, from Mount Pisgah's lofty
height,

I view my home and take my flight.
This robe of flesh I'll drop, and rise
To seize the everlasting prize;
And shout, while passing through
the air,
[prayer!'

49 Tune-S. S. & S., No. 49.

"

THE great Physician now is near,
The sympathizing Jesus;
He speaks the drooping heart to
cheer:

Oh, hear the voice of Jesus.

3

Sweetest note in seraph song,
Sweetest name on mortal tongue,
Sweetest carol ever sung,
Jesus, blessed Jesus.

Your many sins are all forgiven;

Oh, hear the voice of Jesus:
Go on your way in peace to heaven,
And wear a crown with Jesus.
All glory to the risen Lamb!

I now believe in Jesus:

I love the blessed Saviour's name,
I love the name of Jesus.

4 His name dispels my guilt and fear,
No other name but Jesus;
Oh, how my soul delights to hear
The precious name of Jesus.
5 Come, brethren, help me sing His
praise,

Oh, praise the name of Jesus;
Come, sisters, all your voices raise,
Oh, bless the name of Jesus.
6 The children, too, both great and
small,

Who love the name of Jesus, May now accept the gracious call To work and live for Jesus.

7 And when to that bright world above
We rise to see our Jesus,

We'll sing around the throne of love
His name, the name of Jesus.

Tune-S. S. & S., No. 50.

I HAVE entered the valley of blessing so sweet,

And Jesus abides with me there;
And His Spirit and blood make my
cleansing complete, [fear.
And His perfect love casteth out
Oh, come to this valley of blessing so sweet,

Where Jesus will fulness bestow;
And believe, and receive, and confess Him,
That all His salvation may know.

2

There is peace in the valley of blessing so sweet,

And plenty the land doth impart; And there's rest for the weary, worn traveller's feet,

And joy for the sorrowing heart.

3 There is love in the valley of blessing so sweet,

Such as none but the blood-washed may feel,

When heaven comes down redeemed spirits to greet,

And Christ sets His covenant seal.

4 There's a song in the valley of bless-
ing so sweet,
[strain,

And angels would fain join the
As with rapturous praises we bow at
His feet,
Crying, Worthy the Lamb that
was slain!"

Tune-S. S. & S., No. 51.
LOVE to tell the Story,
Of unseen things above,
Of Jesus and His glory,

Of Jesus and His love.
I love to tell the Story,

Because I know it's true;
It satisfies my longings,

As nothing else would do.
I love to tell the Story,
"Twill be my theme in glory
To tell the Öld. Old Story,
Of Jesus and His love.

2 I love to tell the Story:

More wonderful it seems
Than all the golden fancies
Of all our golden dreams.
I love to tell the Story;

It did so much for me;
And that is just the reason
I tell it now to thee.

3 I love to tell the Story;

'Tis pleasant to repeat
What seems, each time I tell it,
More wonderfully sweet.
I love to tell the Story:

For some have never heard
The message of salvation
From God's own Holy Word.

4 I love to tell the Story;

For those who know it best Seem hungering and thirsting To hear it, like the rest.

[blocks in formation]

2 "Almost persuaded," come, come today;

"Almost persuaded," turn not away; Jesus invites you here,

Angels are lingering near,

Prayers rise from hearts so dear,
O wanderer, come.

3" Almost persuaded," harvest is past! "Almost persuaded," doom comes at last!

53

I

"Almost" cannot avail:
"Almost" is but to fail;
Sad, sad, that bitter wail-
"Almost," but lost!

Tune-S. S. & S., No. 53.
HEAR the Saviour say,

"Thy strength indeed is small : Child of weakness, watch and pray, Find in Me thine all in all."

Jesus paid it all, All to Him I owe;

Sin had left a crimson stain; He washed it white as snow.

2 Lord, now indeed I find

Thy blood, and Thine alone,
Can change the leper's spots,
And melt the heart of stone.
3 For nothing good have I

Whereby Thy grace to claim:
I'll wash my garments white
In the blood of Calvary's Lamb.
4 When from my dying bed

My ransomed soul shall rise,
Then, "Jesus paid it all"
Shall rend the vaulted skies.

5 And when before the throne I stand in Him complete, I'll lay my trophies down, All down at Jesus' feet.

Tune-S. S. & S., No. 54.

AM coming to the cross;

I am poor, and weak, and blind;
I am counting all but dross;
I shall full salvation find.

I am trusting, Lord, in Thee,
Blessed Lamb of Calvary;
Humbly at Thy cross I bow-
Save me, Jesus, save me now.

2 Long my heart has sighed for Thee, Long has evil reigned within; Jesus sweetly speaks to me

"I will cleanse you from all sin." 3 Here I give my all to Thee,

Friends, and time, and earthly Soul and body Thine to be- [store, Wholly Thine for evermore.

4 In the promises I trust,

Now I know the blood applied; I am prostrate in the dust,

I with Christ am crucified.

5 Jesus comes! He fills my soul!
Perfected in Him I am;
I am every whit made whole :
Glory, glory to the Lamb.

55

THE

Still I'm trusting, Lord, in Thee,
Blessed Lamb of Calvary;
Humbly at Thy cross I bow;
Jesus saves me-saves me now!

I am longing for Thy favour;
Whilst Thou'rt calling, oh call me-

Thou canst make the blind to see:
Witnesser of Jesu's merit,

Bind my heart, O Lord, to Thee;
While the streams of life are springing,
Blessing others, oh, bless_me-
Even me.
Tune-S. S. & S., No. 56.
UIDE me, O Thou great Jehovah,
Pilgrim through this barren land;
I am weak, but Thou art mighty;

no more.

Open now the crystal fountain,

Whence the healing waters flow; Let the fiery, cloudy pillar,

Lead me all my journey through: Strong Deliverer, Be thou still my strength and shield.

3 When I tread the verge of Jordan, Bid my anxious fears subside; Bear me through the swelling current,

Land me safe on Canaan's side : Songs of praises I will ever give to Thee.
