Eight papers from an interdisciplinary forum held at Dresden on change and stability in the relationship between the State and the individual during the Roman Republic. The heavily annotated papers focus on the changeable connection between social classes, the history of the mos maiorum concept from the inception of the Republic to the time of Cicero, the imposition or appropriation of laws and customs from other lands and the place of religion in Republican Rome.
