Vence is a little old town in the lower foot-hills of the French Alps well off the beaten track of the tourists who throng Nice and Monte Carlo. Its pale-rose and yellow plaster houses are surrounded by the medieval town wall; olive-orchards lie beyond; while far off, through gaps in the low hills near the shore, one may catch a glimpse of the Mediterranean, peacock blue on clear days, and dark gray when the mistral ruffles it with whitecaps On the shady terrasse of one of the Vence cafés one may smoke one's pipe and while away pleasant hours watching the life of the town winding by along the main street, where the sharp-eyed observer may still note traces of medieval, and even of Roman days Sospel is one of the many towns in the country near Vence that Mr. Marvin found interesting and attractive. It has old, very old, narrow streets opening unexpectedly into large arcaded squares. Sospel is very quiet to-day, although in medieval times it was an important town |
