and the caves he was forc'd to hide himself in; or (which is the fame in effect) his great troubles which brought him, into fuch dangers, and hiding places. So there is no need to think that Chrift was any lower than the grave in the deep. There is no need, nor true reafon to think he was fo low as in the prifon of hell, call'd the deep (aßuar) Luke viii. 31.

Epb. iv. 9 is the fame with John iii. 13; the lower parts of the earth being these lower parts of the world wherein we dwell, P. 139. 15. Isa. 44. 23.) and to which the grave belongs. Or by the lower parts of the earth may be meant the grave, (P. 63. 9, 10.) into which Chrift was to defcend, before he afcended into heaven. His words John xx. 17, I am not yet afcended to my Father, prove no more, than that he had not afcended in his body; as Ats ii. 34.

body, call'd) our earthly boufe of this tabernacle (Job, iv. 19. 2 Pet. 1. 13, 14) were diffolved (by death) we have a building of God, an boufe not made with hands, (to fupply the want of our body) eternal in the heavens (until the Refurrection of our body, and then compleated in our body forever.)

2. For in this (earthly body) we groan earnestly, defiring to be clothed upon with our boufe which is from heaven; (and in which we fhall go thither.

3. This fhall be,) If fo be that being clothed (with our body, that is, before we die,) we shall not be found naked (without righteousness. Rev. iii. 17, 18. ch. 16. 15. It feems to be rather thus) If fo be that (when we die, ducámerosi yúures Evgenσóμelα.) we fall be found clothed (with righteousness,) not naked.

4. For we that are in this tabernacle do grone, being burdened (with fin and mifery:) not for that we would be unclothed, (without our body, or any clothing in the place of it,) but clothed upon, (have better clothing, a finless bleffed houfe of our Souls ;) that mortality might be swallowed up of life.

5. Now be that bath wrought us for the felf fame thing, is God; who alfo bath given unto us the earneft of the Spirit.

6. Therefore we are always confident (in expectation of being clothed upon, and of bleffed life in heaven immediately after death) knowing that whilst we are at home in the (earthly) body, we are abfent from the Lord,

7. For we walk (in confidence) by faith, the belief of what death will bring us to,) not by fight (of it now.)

8. We are confident, I fay, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be prefent with the Lord (in heaven. ver. 1, 2. John xii. 26. Phil. i. 23. Ecclef, iii. 21.

No other place is to be found in the Scripture for the Souls of the Saints at any time, either before, or after the Resurrection of Chrift; when the Papifts fay thofe Souls came out of their place in hell. And others have believ'd that they are there until the day of Judgment.

Therefore

Therefore in heaven they always were, as well as Enoch and Elias. And from heaven without doubt the Soul of Mofes came with Elias, when they appear'd to Chrift. Matth. xvii. 3.

The devil's pretending to raise up Samuel, 1 Sam. xxviii, proves nothing but that there was then fuch a grofs error among men, as to think that the Souls even of the beft Saints were in the power of devils, and also at the black commands of the worst of mankind. ver. 11. A Chriftian therefore may not think it was Samuel that appear'd, but the familiar Spirit in his fhape. Whereas it is faid, When the Woman faw Samuel: And Saul perceived that it was Samuel: And Samuel faid: that is only according to the opinion of Saul and the witch; or according to the outward appearance, as the ferpent is faid to speak to, and deceive Eve, when it was the devil in the ferpent. As to that Spirit's foretelling, he might eafily perceive the overthrow of Saul, by his coming to him, and God's forfaking him. And Satan might have exprefs leave from God to punish Saul and his army, as he had to afflict Job.

They were Angels that carried Lazarus into Abraham's Bofom, to be fure not in the power of devils. Nor did they bring him into any place of comfort in hell; altho' the parable fays that the rich man faw Abraham afar off, and that they fpake one to another. For parables are not to be taken ftrictly according to the words, but according to the defign of them. And the defign of that parable is to fhew the different condition of the righteous and the wicked after death: who we may be fure are not fo near, as to fee or talk with one another. Luke viii. 31. ch. 16. 23. John v. 22. Matth. vii. 21, 22, 23. When the wicked are brought out of hell, and placed on the left hand, they will then plainly fee that there is no pleading for mercy. Therefore, Many will Jay to me in that day, is to be understood of the day of death.
