mis'd to thofe they Baptized, that they should be afterwards further taught by the Holy Ghoft. John 14. 26. ch. 16. 13, 14, 15. See the Divine Inftitution of Confirmation, Part 2. ch. 3.

So the Baptifm of them all was, The Baptized his being wafh'd in token of his true repentance, in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.

And the inward Grace of the fame Baptifm of them all, as it is plainly affirm'd to be the remiffion of fins: So John 3. 5. ch. 4. 1, 10, it is declar'd to be alfo the grace of the Holy Ghoft; without which the Baptized could not perform, nor make good the repentance and faith, which in his Baptifm he profefs'd. Nor could he have the fame grace, if he neglected Baptifin.

Altho' when Chrift was Baptiz'd, he had no fins to repent of, or to be forgiven: yet by his Baptifm he declar'd his renouncing all fin, and fulfilling all righteousness: whereby he did abide in the love of his Father; (John 15. 10) as his difciples by repentance and Baptifin have the forgivenefs of their fins.

Therefore both the Baptism of our Bleffed Lord, and of all that were Baptiz'd in his Name, whether by John, (Acts 19. 4) or by the Apostles, (ch. 2. 38) was one and the fame Baptifm.

The LORD'S SUPPER,

I. Question. WHAT is the Lord's Supper?

a Ordain'd at the Feaft of the Paffover

A.The Lord's Supper is the Lord's Feaft a, to be receiv'd with gladness for the Great Love and Benefits of Chrift remembred therein b.

Supper, (Matth. 26.
26. Exod. 34. 25)
and inftead of that
Eeaft. For the Paff-
over was a Type forefignifying the Sacrifice of Chrift's Death;
(1 Cor. 5. 7.) and this Sacrament is a Sign to remember the
fame.

b Acts 2. 46. The bread of the Sacrament, and the feaft they had with it (Jude 12.) they did eat with gladness, av dyydaλιάσει with great gladnefs.

Wonderful is the Love of Chrift, in that he will have us keep a remembrance of his fo Grievous Dying for us, not with Sorrow, but with Rejoycing. We ought therefore to Honour his fo Great Love by a due Rejoycing; and if we are in mourning, to lay it afide (Levit. 10. 19) with all the figns of it (Matth. 22. 11, 12) either upon our felves, or in the place where this Holy Remembrance is made. And this Feaft may not be kept upon any fafting day. Matth. 9. 15.

In our preparation for this Holy Feaft we cannot mourn too much for our fins, the causes of our Saviour's Bitter Death, and for that his Dying for our fins.

But when we have confeft our fins at the holy Table, with unfeigned forrow for them, then we must comfort our felves with the Prayer for pardon, and the comfortable sentences that follow; and banish all forrow from our hearts; and Lift up our hearts with joyful thanksgiving for his Redeeming us from all forrow by his Death, and for all the Benefits of it.

II. Q. Why was the Sacrament of the Lord's Supper ordain'd?

A. For the continual remembrance of the Sacri24,25,26. fice of the Death of Chrift, and of the benefits which we receive thereby.

III. Q. What is the Sacrifice of the Death of Christ?

A. His

By his Body broken for our pardon, as well as by his Blood fhed: for both equally fignify his Death.

By his Dying for our pardon, upon condition of our obedience, he Seal'd all the Promises and Commands of the New Teftament; like as Eod. 24. 8, by the Type of his Blood (Heb. 9. 18) were fealed all the Promises and Commands of the Old Teftament in the foregoing Chapters..

By his Dying for the forgivenefs of our fins, he has feal'd all the Promises of the New Teftament; because all the mercies promised are contain'd in the forgiveness of our fins. See the Creed, 44 2

And by his Dying for our pardon, upon condition of our obeying all the Commands of the New Teftament, he has feal'd all thofe Commands.

The New Teftament is call'd a Teftament, because it was our Lord's Will when he Died. It is call'd the New Teftament with refpect to the Old Teftament or Covenant, Exod. 24. 8. And that is call'd the firft teftament Heb. 9. 18, because it was Seal'd, or ratified with blood, the Type of Chrift's Death, 15 to 21.

V. Q.

V. Q. What is the outward part or fign of the Lord's Supper?

A. Bread and wine; which the Lord hath commanded to be receiv'd.

VI. Q. How are the bread and wine to be blessed before they are receiv'd?

a As Chrift bleffed them by giving thanks. Matth. 26, 27. Luke 22. 19. b Because by Chrift's Dying for the forgiveness of our fins we receive all benefits.. See the Creed 44. 2

The Minister is to blefs the bread and wine by giving thanks a for Chrift's Dying for the forgiveness of our fins, and for all the Benefits which we receive thereby (of which benefits the bread and wine are fome b) and for Chrift's ordaining this Bleffed Remembrance of his Dying for us c..

Reason plainly teaches us to give thanks for these things. And the Church plainly teaches the fame in the Exhortation beginning with Dearly beloved in the Lord. This bleffing the holy figns is done in the Thanksgiving beginning with thefe words, It is very meet, right, and our bounden duty. For thofe things we are to give thanks, as we are directed in that Exhortation; altho' they be not exprefs'd in the words of the Thanksgiving. And at our high Feafts we add a further fuitable Thanksgiving.

Altho' it is the Minifter's Part to blefs the holy Signs; the people muft joyn with him, and exprefs the fame by saying

Amen.

*This is a bleffed Remembrance of Chrift's Dying for us: 1. Because it is to be with gladness for his Great Love and Benefits: 2. Because by remembring his Death Sealing the New Teftament, our belief of the Promifes, and our obedience to the Commands of the New Teftament are powerfully kept up and quicken'd. And 3. Because by the fame belief and obedience fo kept up and quicken'd, we receive the forgiveness and grace, and all other mercies promised in the New Testament.

VII. Q. What else is the Minifter to do for the bleling of the bread and wine?"

A. He is to fhew how according to the Word of Chrift, the bread is the fign of his Body brok

This is done in the Prayer of Confecration by faying Chrift's Word with fuitable

actions. And it is done after the blef fing of thanksgiving: as Chrift after giving thanks said, This is my body which is given (broken) for you: this do in remembrance of me.

This is done in the Prayer of Confecration, and the Prayer next before it.

In the Prayer of Confecration the people are to joyn with the Minister, and express the fame by faying Amen. The meaning of which Amen is in fhort this, Lord grant the benefits of thy Son's Death to us, who remember his Death according to his Word repeated by the Minister.

How does Dr. Comber forget himself, in directing the Communicants to read in his book, while the Minifter is faying that Prayer? What can be more evident than that we mult fo attend to all the parts of the Service, as not to interrupt our felves by any reading or meditations? Let thy reading or meditations be while others are communicating, or before the Service begins.

VIII. Q. How are the bread and wine to be received when they are blessed?

a 1 Cor. 11. 24.

A. The Minifter is to break the bread for us, to put us in As Chrift's difciples mind of Chrift's Body broken for us a and then it is to be received from him, and afterwards the wine b. IX. Q. What is the inward part or thing figni
