Our Father Abrah'm's steps pursue,
And walk in all thy ways.

5 Saviour of men, incline

The hearts which thou hast made, Which thou hast bought with love divine, To ask thy promis'd aid.

Me and my house receive,

Thy family t' increase,
And let us in thy favour live,
And let us die in peace.

PRAYER AND WATCHFULNESS.

1

A RACIOUS Redeemer, shake

G This slumber from my soul!
Say to me now, "s awake, awake,

And Christ shall make thee whole."

2 Lay to thy mighty hand,

Alarm me in this hour:

And make me fully understand
The thunder of thy power!

3 Give me on thee to call,
Always to watch and pray,
Lest I into temptation fall,
And cast my shield away.
4 For each assault prepar'd,
And ready may I be,

For ever standing on my guard,
And looking up to thee.

5 O do thou always warn
My soul of evil near!

When to the right or left I turn,
Thy voice still let me hear:
6" Come back! this is the way!
Come back! and walk therein!"

O may I hearken and obey,
And shun the path of sin.

Hymn 257. S. M.

That the power of Christ may rest upon me.

1 TJ

2 Cor. xii. 9.

HOU seest my feebleness,
Jesus, be thou my power,

My help and refuge in distress,
My fortress and my tower.

2 Give me to trust in thee;

Be thou my sure abode ;
My horn, and rock, and buckler be,
My Saviour and my God.

3 Myself I cannot save,

Myself I cannot keep,

But strength in thee I surely have,
Whose eyelids never sleep.

4 My soul to thee alone,

Now therefore I commend; Thou, Jesus, love me as thy own, And love me to the end.

Hymn 258. P. M.

Rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation ; continuing instant in prayer. Rom. xii. 12.

THOU

PART FIRST.

HOU Almighty Lord, my Saviour and
King;

Thy succour afford, thy righteousness bring:
Thy promises bind thee compassion to have,
Now, now let me find thee Almighty to save;

2 Rejoicing in hope, and patient in grief; To thee I look up for certain relief';

I fear no denial, no danger I fear,

Nor start from the trial, while Jesus is near.

3 I every hour in jeopardy stand;

But thou art my power, and holdest my hand;
While yet I am calling thy succour I feel,
It saves me from falling, or plucks me from

hell.

40 who can explain this struggle for life! This travail and pain, this trembling and strife! [and war; Plagues, earthquake, and famine, and tumult The wonderful coming of Jesus declare!

Hymn 259. P. M.

For every battle of the warrior is with confused noise, and garments rolled in blood. Isa. ix. 5.

PART SECOND.

OR every fight is dreadful and loud!
The warrior's delight is slaughter and
blood,

His foes overturning, till all shall expire-
And this is with burning and fuel of fire.
2 Yet God is above men, devils, and sin,
My Jesus's love the battle shall win:
So terribly glorious his coming shall be,
His love all-victorious shall conquer for me.

3 He all shall break through, his truth and his grace

Shall bring me into the plentiful place: Through much tribulation, through water and

fire, [desire. Through floods of temptation, and flames of 4 On Jesus my power, till then I rely; All evil before his presence shall fly : When I have my Saviour, my sin shall depart. And Jesus for ever shall reign in my heart.

Hymn 260. S. M.

By honour and dishonour, by evil report and good report: as deceivers, and yet true. 2 Cor. vi. S.

'BID

ID me of men beware,
And to my ways take heed:

Discern their every secret snare,
And circumspectly tread.

120 may I calmly wait

Thy succour from above!
And stand against their open hate,
And well-dissembled love.

3 My spirit, Lord, alarm,

When men and devils join:
'Gainst all the powers of Satan arm,
In righteousness divine.

4 O may I set my face,

His onsets to repel;

Quench all his fiery darts, and chase
The fiend to his own hell.

5 But above all, afraid

Of my own bosom foe,

Still let me seek to thee for aid,

To thee my weakness show,

6. Hang on thy arm alone,

1

With self-distrusting care,
And deeply in the Spirit groan
The never-ceasing prayer.

Hymn 261. S. M.

Abstain from all appearance of evit. 1 Thess. v. 22.

GIV

IVE me a sober mind,
A quick discerning eye,

The first approach of sin to find,
And all occasions fly.
