(Seven questions should be answered, including questions from both parts).

A.

1. From what sources do we obtain information concerning the Angles and Saxons before they conquered Britain ? Under what form of government did

they live in Germany?

2. Discuss the part played by the Danes and Northmen in the history of West Europe. To what extent did they influence English institutions and society?

3. Give a brief history of the Norman conquest of England. Explain the ease and thoroughness with which William accomplished his work.

4. Describe the Papal Reformation of the Eleventh century, illustrating its effects from English Church History between 1066 and 1135.

5. In what relation did king, baronage and people stand to each other (i) in the reign of Rufus; (ii) in the administrative reforms of Henry II; (iii) just before Magna Charta was signed? Can you see traces of popular influence in the Charter?

6. Illustrate the character and genius of Richard I from the events of the Third Crusade.

7. Justify, if you can, the Scottish policy of Edward I; and account for the ultimate failure of his plans.

8. Describe and account for the literary and political awakening of England towards the end of the fourteenth century. Can you see reasons for its brief duration?

9. What are the chief points in the constitutional and religious settlement of 1688-9 ?

10. To what extent was the House of Commons in the XVII Century representative of the nation?

11. What were the effects on English constitutional development of the American revolution?

12. Write short notes on any three of :-The Habeas Corpus Act; the Declaration of Indulgence; the Peerage Bill of 1719; the Union of England and Scotland; the Union of England and Ireland.

Seven questions should be attempted

1. Describe the main new features introduced into Britain by the Roman conquest. How many of them survived the withdrawal of Roman military force?

2. From what sources do we obtain information concerning the Angles and Saxons before they conquered Britain? Under what form of government did they live in Germany?

3. Contrast Alfred as king, either with a continental monarch, say Charles the Great; or with one of the Angevin kings. May we call him great as well as good?

4. Give a brief history of the Norman conquest of England. Explain the ease and thoroughness with which William accomplished his work.

5. Discuss the Papal Reformation of the eleventh century, and illustrate its results from Norman-English history.

6. Write notes on five of the following terms: gesith, secular clergy, assize of arms, scutage, curia regis, knight's fee, justiciar, hundred.

7. Illustrate the character and genius of Richard I. from the events of the Third crusade.

8. In what relation did king, baronage, and people stand to each other (i) in the reign of Rufus; (ii) under Henry II: (iii) just before Magna Charta was signed? Describe also the attitude of English churchmen towards the charter.

9. Compare the missionary policy of the Irish church with that of the Franciscans of the twelfth century.

10. Trace the growth of a national parliament from the conquest to the assembly of 1265.

11. Justify, so far as you can, the Scottish policy of Edward I; and account for the ultimate failure of his plans.

12. Describe the literary and intellectual renaissance of the later fourteenth century in England. Examine the causes which gave it birth, and the reasons for its sudden decay.

EUROPEAN HISTORY, 1609-1815.

Seven questions should be attempted

1. Describe and account for the position held by the Dutch in Europe between 1609 and 1672.

2. Illustrate, from the career of Gustavus Adolphus, the secular ends which blended with religion in the Thirty Years War. Can we prove Gustavus interested in the higher motive?

3. "Sa grande supériorité fut.....de ne proposer que l'opportun, de ne tenter que le possible, de n'exécuter que le durable." (His great superiority lay.....in proposing only the opportune, in attempting only the possible, in achieving only ends that would endure). Illustrate this eulogy of Richelieu as the perfect diplomatist by a comparison with the schemes of Louis XIV.

4. Discuss the claims of either Marlborough, or Frederick the Great, to military pre-eminence, illustrating your estimate from one of their greater campaigns. (If possible, use a map).

5. To what extent did England gain what she sought in the Treaty of Utrecht? Do you think that it would have

satisfied William of Orange?

6. "England defeated France in the Seven Years War because she had the better government." How far is this true; and how far was the victory a personal triumph for Pitt?

7. Enumerate the parts constituting the Austrian Hapsburgs' dominions in the eighteenth century, and discuss the strength and weakness brought to Austria by the Imperial title.
