PREPARATORY LATIN.

I.

Translate :

(1) Quibus ex navibus cum essent expositi milites circiter trecenti, atque in castra contenderent, Morini, quos Caesar in Britanniam proficiscens pacatos reliquerat, spe praedae adducti primo non ita magno suorum numero circumsteterunt, ac, si sese interfici nollent, arma ponere iusserunt.

(2) His rebus constitutis, Caesar ad portum Itium cum legionibus pervenit. Ibi cognoscit sexaginta naves, quae in Meldis factae erant, tempestate reiectas cursum tenere non potuisse, atque eodem. unde erant profectae revertisse: reliquas paratas ad navigandum atque omnibus rebus instructas invenit.

II. (1) Give the principal parts of the following verbs-expono, contendo, relinquo, adduco, pervenio, cognosco.. What case is spe,

(2) Explain the use of quibus. and why?

(3) Parse fully paratas and navigandum. (4) Explain the mood of essent expositi.

III. (1) Give the accusative singular and genitive plural of milites, spe, portum, legionibus.

(2) Give the 3rd singular of the present and imperfect subjunctive active of expono, interficio, iubeo and paro.

IV. (1) VIRGIL AENEID I.

(a)

Hic vasto rex Aeolus antro
Luctantes ventos tempestatesque sonoras
Imperio premit ac vinclis et carcere frenat.
Illi indignantes magno cum murmure montis
Circum claustra fremunt; celsa sedet Aeolus arce
Sceptra tenens, mollitque animos et temperat iras.

(b) Aeolus haec contra; "Tuus, O regina, quid optes
Explorare labor; mihi jussa capessere fas est.
Tu mihi quodcumque hoc regni, tu sceptra Jovemque
Concilias, tu das epulis accumbere divom,
Nimborumque facis tempestatumque potentem.

(2) Explain the mood of optes; the case of vinclis and of divom.

(3) Scan the following lines:

(a) Luctantes ventos tempestatesque sonoras

(b) Sceptra tenens, mollitque animos et temperat iras

(c) Concilias tu das epulis accumbere divom.

V. Translate into Latin:

1. Labienus exhorted Caesar to lead his army across the Rhine. 2. When Caesar had decided to lead his army across to Britain he ordered the ships to assemble.

3. Since the Gauls were again entering upon hostilities, Caesar crossed the river without delay.

4. There the Romans awaited the arrival of the enemy for five hours.

5. Caesar said that the Germans were making preparations for

war.

6. The scout reports that the camp has been stormed by the Gauls.

VI. Translate at sight:

Caesari cum id nuntiatum esset, eos per provinciam nostram iter facere conari, maturat ab urbe proficisci, et quam maximis potest itineribus in Galliam ulteriorem contendit, et ad Genuam pervenit. Provinciae toti quam maximum potest militum numerum imperat (erat omnino in Gallia ulteriore legio una), pontem, qui erat ad Genuam, iubet rescindi.

SECTION A.

1. (a) Translate:

Et ad alterum cornu Aebutius magister equitum in Octavium Mamilium impetum dederat, nec fefellit veniens Tusculanum ducem, contra quem et ille concitat equum: tantaque vis infestis venientium hastis fuit, ut bracchium Aebutio traiectum sit, Mamilio pectus percussum. Hunc quidem in secundam aciem Latini recepere; Aebutius cum saucio bracchio tenere telum non posset, pugna excessit. Latinus dux nihil deterritus volnere proelium ciet, et quia suos perculsos videbat, arcessit cohortem exulum Romanorum, cui Luci Tarquini filius praeerat. Ea, quo maiore pugnabat ira ob erepta bona patriamque ademptam, pugnam parumper restituit.

(b) Account for the Mood of sit, posset, videbat.

(c) Account for the Case of venientium, hastis, cui. (d) Write explanatory notes on the syntax of ille, Mamilio, nihil, ob erepta bona.

2. Write brief explanatory notes on magister equitum, dictator, atrium, and give the Latin for the 9th of April, 1911.

3. (a) Translate:

telorum effundere contra

omne genus Teucri ac duris detrudere contis,
adsueti longo muros defendere bello.

saxa quoque infesto volvebant pondere, si qua

possent tectam aciem perrumpere, cum tamen omnes

ferre iuvat subter densa testudine casus.

nec iam sufficiunt. nam qua globus imminet ingens,
immanem Teucri molem volvontque ruuntque,
quae stravit Rutulos late armorumque resolvit
tegmina. nec curant caeco contendere Marte
amplius audaces Rutuli, sed pellere vallo

(b) Write explanatory notes on the meaning of longo bello, densa testudine, caeco Marte.

(c) Scan the second line of the extract and comment upon the scansion of the last line.

4. Mention some of the characteristics of Vergil's poetry, and illustrate your points from the ninth book of the Æneid.

5. State briefly in chronological order the principal events of the life of Marius.

SECTION B.

1. (a) Give the 2nd Pers. Sing. Pres. Subjunctive of malo, do, possum, eo, fio.

(b) Give the Future Infinitive Passive of vinco, the Present Infinitive Passive of interficio, and the Vocative Singular Masculine of the Future Participle of morior.

2. Translate into Latin:

Now that the German war was brought to an end, Caesar resolved to pass over to Britain. He had always heard that the people of that island were in the habit of sending troops to help the Gauls. He was persuaded, too, that the Gauls would not maintain their allegiance to Rome if they could always count on help from Britain. He therefore ordered all the legions which were wintering in Gaul that year to be mobilized at port Itius.

3. Translate:

Constituendi autem sunt qui sint in amicitia fines et quasi termini deligendi; de quibus tres video sententias ferri quarum nullam probo: unam ut eodem modo erga amicos affecti simus quo erga nosmet ipsos; alteram ut nostra in amicos benevolentia illorum erga nos benevolentiae pariter aequaliterque respondeat; tertiam ut quanti quisque se ipse facit, tanti fiat ab amicis.
