1. Define the following terms as applied to rocks: porphyritic, acidic, amygdaloidal, metamorphic, pegmatitic.

2. Discuss the effects of temperature as an agency in weathering.

3. Describe the following rock-types, mentioning in each case the essential constituents: hornblende-syenite, gabbro, shale, quartz-diorite, granite-gneiss.

4. Cite evidences for the belief that the interior of the earth is highly heated, What bearing has this condition on earthquakes?

5. In

terms:

connection with glaciation, define the following neve, terminal moraine, crevasse, medial, moraine,

drift, snow-line, striae, eskers, ice-berg, nunatak.

6. Discuss briefly the origin, transportation and deposition

of sediments.

7. Two outcrops of sedimentary rock one hundred miles apart are believed to be of the same age. Discuss the methods for proving it.

8. Give a synopsis of the probable climatic conditions during the Permian, Carboniferous, Cambrian, and Pleistocene periods, with the reasons for these deductions.

9. Discuss the events of any one of the Paleozoic periods and name some of the important fossils connected with it.

10. From the following list of fossils, select a dozen and give a short description or a diagram of each, the class of

organisms to which each belongs, and the period in which each is found:

Cordaites, Triceratops, Ammonites, Ichthyornis, Sigillaria, Belodon, Halysites catinulatus, Megalomus canadensis, Rafinesquina alternata, Tropidoleptus carinatus, Rhynchotrema capax, Spirifer acuminatus, Olenellus thompsoni, Atrypa reticularis, Isotelus gigas, Lingulepis pinniformis, Orthoceras duseri, Hipparionyx proximus, Productus semireticulatus, Heliophyllum halli.

3. Give an account of the reforms of Gaius Gracchus, and discuss the aims which he had in view.

4. Give a sketch of the public reforms made or projected

by Julius Caesar.

5. Give an account of the operations of the Romans in Britain to the death of Agricola.

6. What action did Hadrian take in regard to (1) the eastern provinces, (2) Roman law, (3) the civil service, (4) the administration of the Italian towns?

B. LITERATURE.

1. Name and describe the different kinds of stage-plays performed during the Republic. What kind did (a) Plautus, (b) Laberius write?

2. Indicate the main characteristics of Latin Elegy. Give a short account and criticism of the works of Tibullus and

Propertius.
