Margaret Ogilvy. By her son, J. M. Barrie. With portrait. (12mo, $1.25,) Twentieth thousand. Sentimental Tommy. The Story of his Boyhood. By J. M. Barrie. (Illustrated by William Hatherell. 12mo, $1.50.) Thirty-fifth thousand. Last January a list of 489 of the leading books published during 1896 was submitted by the State Library to 800 librarians, who were to select the fifty most valuable for a library. In the list thus prepared by trained experts, "Sentimental Tommy" was first and Margaret Ogilvy" was seventh. The critics seem to agree, almost without a dissenting voice, that these two volumes represent Mr. Barrie's highest literary achievement thus far.

How to Know the Wild Flowers

This is a revised and enlarged edition of Mrs. William Starr Dana's fascinating volume. (Crown 8vo, 1.50 net.) With 150 illustrations by Marion Satterlee. The extraordinary popularity of Mrs. Dana's book, now in its thirty-second thousand, would be easily explicable on the ground alone of its effectiveness." Adopting an idea of John Burroughs's, she has arranged all our common wild flowers according to color, with concise yet clear descriptions, which enable any reader to recognize a particular specimen at once. The New York Times says: "So far as we recall books on flowers, it is the first that makes country walks an intelligent joy for those who know nothing of botany, but who have eyes to see and minds to question. It is a very superior work, and the illustrations correspond with the text."

The Builders and Other Poems. By Henry van Dyke

This collection of Dr. van Dyke's poems is most attractively bound in gilt vellum. (12m0, $1.50.) Edmund Clarence Stedman has said: "A Snow Song' is poesy itself, and the stanzas on 'Röslein' and 'Hawthornden' are flawless. But even these two pieces could be better spared than An Angler's Wish.' Fortunate is the book of modern verse that has one lyric so restful and unexpected that it captures everybody at once, and is as sure to pass into literature as this natural, joyous outburst."

The Life of Philip Schaff. By David S. Schaff

Professor of Church History in Lane Theological Seminary. With portraits (8vo, $3.00). The life of the late Dr. Schaff was a particularly representative one. Born a Swiss and educated in Germany, he passed his mature life in America, connected closely with the theological instruction of youth, with the liberal movement in Biblical criticism, and with the Evangelical Alliance. He was a scholar of worldwide reputation and left much material of especially varied interest, on which his son has based an instructive biography.

A Winter Swallow. By Edith M. Thomas

(12m0, $1. 50.) Mr. Richard Henry Stoddard, poet and critic, says of this volume: "There is more poetry, and a finer kind, in this than in any volume of American verse that we have had for years—we will not say from the pen of a woman, which would be to belittle the poetic capacity of her sex, but from the pen of any man whom fate has sent us since our elder singers have passed beyond the veil."

America and the Americans

"From a French Point of View" the critic has described us, with such acumen and penetration, as well as such graceful literary style, that six editions have been required to satisfy the demand for it. The Boston Beacon says: “Of the book as a whole one may say without reservation that it is immensely entertaining, and that its unsparing criticisms, which are never malicious, may almost invariably be accepted as fully deserved."

From the "New York Tribune"

"Nowhere could there be found a volume better adapted to popular uses than this compendium of one of the wisest of our Presidents. Does every citizen know the laws relating to the duties of the Executive, the Cabinet, the Senate, and the House? We are all supposed to know them, but it is highly probable that General Harrison's succinct explanations will throw light upon obscure places for thousands of voters. These explanations are reinforced by many anecdotes.

"To paint the Government thus in its true democratic colors is part of General Harrison's aim; he seeks above all things to inspire in his readers a sense of loyalty to a political organism that appeals to him on grounds of justice, rectitude, and common-sense. 'With an ardent love for our country,' he approaches his task, and the tone of his book is, for all its businesslike handling of business matters, peculiarly patriotic. Americans, and especially young Americans, will find abundant timely instruction in these pages. They will find also a spur to their affection for the beneficent Government under which they live and of which, as General Harrison is careful to tell them, they are an essential factor.

"The volume is provided with an excellent index. Written originally for a popular periodical, these chapters are couched in simple language, but having been carefully revised and augmented, they possess a permanent value." CHARLES SCRIBNER'S SONS, Publishers, New York

A New Edition of "The Spectator"

:

The Text Edited and Annotated by Mr. G. Gregory Smith of Edinburgh University. With an Introductory Essay by Mr. Austin Dobson. In Eight Volumes. To Appear Monthly. Volumes Not Sold Separately. Foolscap 8vo, Half Canvas, with Miniature Portrait Frontispiece in each Volume. Price per Set, $12.00 Messrs. Charles Scribner's Sons, in conjunction with Messrs. J. M. Dent & Co., will begin at once an entirely new edition of Steele and Addison's "Spectator" a work so long and so justly held in the affection of all those who appreciate English Literature. It will include the following features: EDITION. This edition of the "Spectator" will be an exact reprint of the first collected edition, which was a revision by the authors of the original daily issue. Its literary value is therefore greater, as showing how Addison, Steele, and their collaborators desired to leave their work in final bookform; and its historical interest is not inferior, for it was in this edition and its reprints, rather than in the stray sheets of the first issue, that the public of Addison's day found their amusement and sought their models of style.

REPRODUCTION. The authors' method of punctuation, their capital letters, and their spelling will be faithfully reproduced, but this will not be condemned as mere pedantry, and it will offer no obstacle to the simple enjoyment of the most modern reader.

AUTHORS. The author's name, when known, will be placed, within square brackets, at the head of each paper.

INTRODUCTION. An exhaustive Introduction has been contributed by Mr. Austin Dobson, and notes, brief in compass and essential to the understanding of the text, will be added at the end of each volume, by the Editor, Mr. G. Gregory Smith.

PORTRAITS. A Frontispiece Portrait in photogravure of some of the littérateurs closely associated with the "Spectator" will be given with each volume.
