WEIR MITCHELL, Author of "In War Time," "When all the Woods are Green," etc., etc. R. WEIR MITCHELL has been engaged for several years upon a novel which will peculiar satisfaction to those in the treatment ican life and character in American fiction. "Hugh Wynne, Free Quaker," is not only Dr. Mitchell's masterpiece, but it is believed that it will rank as one of the greatest of American novels. It is a story of social life in Philadelphia at the time of the Revolution and of the exciting scenes of the Revolutionary War itself, the time covering a period from 1753 to 1783. Among the characters in the story are Washington, Franklin, Lafayette, Dr. Benjamin Rush, Benedict Arnold, and Major André. The hero, Hugh Wynne, is the son of a Philadelphia Quaker, of good English blood, and his mother-a most exquisite character is French. Hugh chafes under the restraints of the Society of Friends, and is finally read out of meeting. He becomes a soldier, serving at one time on the staff of Benedict Arnold, when he was in command of the American forces in Philadelphia. He is captured at the battle of Germantown and suffers for months in a British prison. Later, while on the staff of General Washington, he takes part in the battle of Yorktown and witnesses the surrender of Cornwallis. The story is told in the first person, and its serial publication in THE CENTURY, beginning in November, will be followed with intense interest. A strong love element runs through it, and Philadelphia society is most delightfully portrayed. Howard Pyle will illustrate it. A ROSE OF YESTERDAY," A Romance of Modern Italy, BY F. THE CENTURY CO-UNION Square New York 13 && "The most complete record of the career of the great THE LIFE OF NAPOLEON BY PROFESSOR WILLIAM M. SLOANE, Now Appearing in The Century Magazine The Life of Napoleon as published in The Century is completed in the October number. IT T will be interesting news to the readers of this magazine that the Life of Napoleon is to be issued in superb book form by The Century Co., printed by the De Vinne Press, with all of the illustrations which have appeared in THE CENTURY, many of them exquisitely reproduced in colors by the typogravure process of Messrs. Boussod, Valadon & Co., of Paris, successors to Goupil & Co. Professor Sloane's Life of Napoleon was undertaken because there had been heretofore no complete and impartial life of the great Emperor, and it is the popular verdict that here is at last a thorough biography, exhibiting all the characteristics of Napoleon, taking full account of his early environment and revealing, for the first time, the political influences which had much to do with the formation of his character, and pointing out equally his faults and his virtues. The New York Times says: "Even close students of modern Napoleonic literature stand in need of learning what this work can tell them." Of the many recent Napoleonic memoirs Professor Sloane has made free use. He has had access, in the archives of the French Foreign Office, in Florence, and in the British Museum, to papers which have never before been fully studied. He has traveled over Europe and made himself thoroughly familiar with the field of the Emperor's battles. The result is A MASTERPIECE OF HISTORICAL WRITING which no student of Napoleon, no lover of history, no one who would have in his library the best works of the day, can afford to be without. Every resource of The Century Co. has been brought to bear to enrich the narrative with ILLUSTRATIONS WORTHY OF THE SUBJECT. European and American collections have been ransacked for portraits of the times. To these have been added some of the greatest modern masterpieces of French art. Commissions have been given to French and American artists for illustrative designs, and artists have been sent to various localities to make drawings of buildings and places as they exist to-day. The great military painters of France are shown in examples of their work. Many of the illustrations are the successes of the Paris Salon of recent years. No popular book has ever been published containing so much fine color work as will be found in this Napoleon Life. The process by which the pictures are produced is a secret known only to its inventors, and is far superior to lithography or any other known color process. The famous paintings of the world are here,- Meissonier's " 1807" and "1814," the works of Philippoteaux, Detaille, and many other masters, including a great number made expressly for this book (in color) and almost exactly reproducing the originals.
