Under these convictions, and as soon as I heard of your intention to comply with the requisition made to you by the principal burgesses to accept of the othee of mayor of this borough, I contemplated the work on which I have been employed, with a view to its dedi cation to you; if it should serve no other purpose than as a testimony of my friendship and esteem: not doubting but that it would be gratifying to you to be put into possession of as much information, as I might be able to collect, with respect to the town and neigh borhood in which you have been induced to fix your residence, and which became not less interesting from the circumstance which induced me to adopt it as mine.
