In the staff corps other than the corps of professors of mathematics, there are no fixed numbers in the various grades and ranks. The actual numbers on September 30, 1926 are shown in Table (b).

(d) Total number of officers, line and staff, on the active list, exclusive of commissioned warrant and warrant officers, based on (1) 80,000 enlisted men, Navy, (2) 75,000, Navy (3), 60,000, and (4) 50,000:

In computing the number of officers in the Medical, Dental, and Chaplain Corps the authorized enlisted strength of the Marine Corps is taken in each case as 27,400, and the number of officers of the line, Supply Corps, Construction, and Civil Engineer Corps is based on the above specific numbers of enlisted men (Navy).

The actual strength of enlisted personnel of the Navy on July 1 of each year beginning July 1, 1922, was:

The authorized strength covering above periods was 131,485 and 6,000 apprentice seamen. Law authorizes in addition 350 flying corps, and Hospital Corps based on 31⁄2 per cent of the strength of the Navy and Marine Corps.
